Malaysia has recently passed a law for a minimal wage to employees effective January 1, 2013 (for those employing more than 5 people) and July 1, 2013 (for those employing 5 or less people). Look for costs of globally sourced product from Malaysia to increase due to the new minimal wage law. A majority of medical product manufactured in Malaysia consists of latex and nitrile medical exam gloves. All factories will be affected starting January 1, 2013 and will be applied to both domestic and foreign workers at the Malaysian facilities. Several large companies are already giving notice of price increases in their gloves to buyers in the West and are looking to pass on the cost of the new law. This is in addition to the ever fluctuating commodities of bulk wet latex rubber and butadiene.
